A Fashion Haven

A few weeks ago, I read a post by Emery Ellen that said ” I think i fall in love a little bit with anyone who shows me their soul, this world is so guarded and fearful , I appreciate rawness so much”.

When I first read this , I thought to myself…This is me in a nutshell. I love connecting with people, meeting new people and having life changing conversations. The best is when you don’t expect it. You walk into a room full of people or you arrive at an event. Naturally, you feel self-conscious and your confidence starts to depart and you start to put up your walls. You start to worry whether you’ll “fit in” or if they will be nice to you. You wonder if you should just turn around and walk away and you begin to ask yourself why and how you ended up in this situation. While you’re so busy juggling all these thoughts in your mind, someone comes over to you and says hello, you’re so shocked and so grateful that they came over and saved you having to come over to them that immediately you like them and the next thing you know you’re blown away by how much you have in common.

This happened to me the other day as I walked into a room full of bloggers, stylists, fashion photographers and PR gurus. The fashion situation was hostile. Oversized sunnies, hats, killer heels, bright lips, selfies, massive camera lenses, Givenchy…It was like a fashion haven . Earlier on that week, Nat from Interlaced Media had invited me to this industry brunch that she was hosting as part of Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Week. I didn’t know what to expect since I’d never really attended an “industry brunch” but I knew one thing was certain, I needed my look to slay, in a major way. (see what I did there) . So I called my girl Neo with only a few days to go and surely enough she came to my rescue! Remember this Neo Couture Maxi from Nocturna Carnivale? Straight off the runway honey…ok maybe a few touch ups (I aint tryna front like I’m model skinny). This dress is stunning. It’s simple, I love the clean cuts in the bust area which give the Drama, and ya’ll know I had to wrap it up and rep my African roots, so the turban was crucial to finish the look off.

As I walked into the room I started worrying that this was going to be one of those little fish in a big pond kinda scenario’s, but the event turned out to be quite the opposite. I was surrounded by people who were on the same journey, who were following their passion, some not knowing where their passions were leading them and some who had arrived at their destinations and were keen to share their struggles and triumphs. I was at home here. Although we had never met each other before, we connected like we had been friend’s for years, like we had known each other in a different life. Thank you to all those who shared with me, I left feeling motivated, stronger and ready to out live my dreams. I appreciate your rawness.

Serving me life as always Mati! This dress is gorgeous. The high waist. Perfection. The fitted round neckline and that exposed cut out shoulder. Glamourous. It’s fashion creativity meets boldness on the corner of Sexy Street and Couture-At-Its-Best Crescent. Neo Couture did this with this dress. The turban is that cherry on top. Love the vibrancy of the colours against the dress. Great choice for accessorizing this look. I like that you kept your overall accessory game minimalistic to really make the turban pop – like the purposeful choice of the dark earrings :).
