I always used to wonder how my life would turn out. I spent a lot of time daydreaming about the things I would achieve and most importantly the kind of man I would be in society. The other morning, I remembered a friend of mine in Uni asked me to write her a short piece on what I thought it meant ‘to be a man’…

“To be a man…”
The first thing about being a man is that one has to understand that he is not an island. A man has to realise that he has to be dependable and depend upon others. To be a man is to show respect of mankind regardless of what their status in life is. Being able to reach out to those in need and being able to give a smile to an individual whose life has not seen much joy is something that goes a long way. To be a man is to understand where one comes from, and as a result to represent his roots in the way he has been taught to do so.
To be a man is to be rational in all the decisions that are made. To think before acting and to listen before giving a response.
To be a man is to realise that one has goals and dreams. The realisation comes when a man is able to pursue those dreams with a full and seeking heart. What defines a real man in this aspect?Well…To be a man is one who is able to reach for the stars and not be afraid to fall out the sky. The defining moment is that when one falls, he should have the faith that he will fall back on the clouds, get up again, and chase that dream once again.
To be a man is to put that woman first. I repeat, to be a man is to put that woman first. To be a man is to realise that one will not reach his full potential without the gentle guiding hand of a woman to be his compass in life. To be a man is to aspire both in mind and body to give that woman the life she deserves. Not necessarily a life filled with luxury and the finer things in life, but a life filled with a man’s time and dedication to remain faithful to that one woman.
To be a man is to never forget those that raised him and gave him his values. To be a man is to always go back to his home and make sure that his guardians will always feel that they are a major part of his life.
